When You Need a Full Replacement Instead of a Repair
Most small chips can be repaired. Some damage requires full replacement. Here's the rule of thumb we use:
Replacement is required if any of these are true:
- The damage is larger than a quarter (we'll verify in person).
- The crack extends to the edge of the windshield
- The damage is in the driver's direct line of sight
- There's more than one chip or crack, or multiple cracks intersecting
- The inner layer of glass is compromised
- The damage is over a sensor, camera mount, or rain sensor
Repair is usually possible if:
- The chip is smaller than a quarter
- The damage is outside the driver's line of sight
- It's been less than a few weeks since the damage occurred (cracks spread with temperature changes)
If you're unsure, send us a photo or stop by either of our shops. We'll always give you an honest answer — we'd rather do a $90 repair than a $400 replacement if a repair is the safer call.

Why Portland Metro Drivers Choose Collision for Windshield Replacement

Expert Windshield Replacement in the Portland Metro Area
A cracked or shattered windshield isn't just an eyesore — it's a safety issue. Your windshield is a structural component of your vehicle, supporting up to 45% of your roof's strength in a rollover and providing the backstop your passenger airbag deploys against in a collision. When it's damaged beyond repair, a proper replacement done to OEM standards isn't optional. It's the difference between a vehicle that protects you and one that doesn't.
At Collision Auto Glass & Calibration, we've been replacing windshields in the Portland metro since 2008. We're family-owned, locally operated, and we treat every vehicle like our own. Our certified technicians install thousands of windshields a year using premium Dow urethane, OEM-quality glass, and the same techniques and standards required by the major auto manufacturers. And when your vehicle's safety cameras and sensors need it, we calibrate them in-house with the Autel MaxiSYS — so your lane-keeping, automatic braking, and other driver-assist systems read the road correctly the moment you drive off, with no separate trip to the dealer. Every install comes with our lifetime no-leak guarantee — for as long as you own the vehicle. That's why we're "Clearly the Best Choice" for windshield replacement in Portland.
Our Windshield Replacement Process
Every windshield we replace follows the same proven process — the one Dow Automotive and SIKA train their certified installers on, and the one the AGRSS (Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standard) requires for a proper install.
Vehicle prep. We protect your dashboard, A-pillar trim, hood, and seats before we touch the glass. Cowl panels, wipers, and trim are removed cleanly — we don't pry or force anything that could damage your paint.
Old glass removal. We lift the damaged windshield out cleanly without disturbing the pinch weld — the metal frame the glass bonds to — so the new install seats correctly.
Surface prep and priming. The pinch weld and new glass are cleaned with the manufacturer-specified primers. This is the step cheap shops skip. Proper priming is what gives the urethane bond its strength.
Urethane application and glass set. We apply a continuous bead of Dow urethane around the pinch weld and set the glass with precision suction tools. Once it's set, the bond is structural — your windshield is now part of your vehicle's frame.
Cure and quality check. We use premium Dow urethane with a 30-minute safe drive-away time. Before you leave, we test for leaks, inspect the install, and walk you through what to expect over the next 24–48 hours.
ADAS calibration if required. If your vehicle has lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, or forward collision warning, we calibrate the cameras in-house using the Autel MaxiSYS system. (More on this in the ADAS section below.)

ADAS Calibration Done In-House — We Don't Sub It Out
If your vehicle was built in the last 5–10 years, there's a good chance it has cameras and sensors mounted near the windshield that power features like lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning. These systems rely on cameras pointed through your windshield — and any time the windshield is replaced, those cameras must be recalibrated to factory specification.
This isn't optional. An uncalibrated ADAS system can misread the road, fail to trigger emergency braking, or steer your vehicle into the wrong lane. Most vehicle manufacturers explicitly require recalibration after windshield replacement, and most insurance companies cover it as part of the glass claim.
We use the Autel MaxiSYS calibration system in-house at both our Portland and Tualatin locations. That means when you bring your vehicle to us — or we come to you with our mobile service — your windshield replacement and ADAS calibration are handled by the same team, in the same visit. You don't need to drive to a dealership afterwards. You don't get hit with a separate calibration bill weeks later. It's all included.

Why a Quality Install Matters
A windshield replacement done wrong can fail in ways you won't see until it's too late. Water leaks that work their way into your A-pillar from the inside. Wind noise that gets worse over months. A bond that fails in a collision. ADAS cameras that read the road wrong because they were never recalibrated.
We've been called to fix cheap-shop installs more times than we can count. Glass set on dirty pinch welds. Urethane beads that skipped a section. Cowls left loose. Cameras that were never calibrated because the shop didn't own the equipment to do it.
We don't cut corners because the math doesn't work. A windshield replacement done right takes the time it takes — usually 1 to 2 hours — and uses the materials and process the vehicle manufacturer specifies. That's what you're paying for, and that's what we deliver every time.

Glass Quality: OEM vs. OEM-Equivalent
We use OEM-quality glass on every install. The vast majority of replacement windshields are manufactured by the same factories that produce the original glass for the vehicle manufacturers — just sold under aftermarket brand names. The difference is the logo, not the glass.
For some vehicles, we recommend using OEM-branded glass if there's a dramatic difference in quality. We'll always tell you up front what glass we're using and why.
